Wi-Fi survey & interference detection using WiFiman

Reliable Wi-Fi isnโ€™t just about signal strength. Understanding interference, airtime usage, and channel congestion is critical to delivering consistent performance.

๐Ÿ“ถ Wi-Fi survey ๐Ÿ“ก Interference โฑ๏ธ Airtime utilisation ๐Ÿง  Real-world analysis

At a glance

Goal
Identify Wi-Fi performance issues beyond signal strength.
Tools
WiFiman and airtime analysis.
Outcome
Clear insight into interference and congestion.

The challenge

Users often report โ€œslow Wi-Fiโ€ or drop-outs even when signal strength appears strong. In many cases, the real issue is interference, poor channel selection, or excessive airtime utilisation from neighbouring networks and devices.

  • High-density environments with overlapping networks
  • Non-Wi-Fi interference affecting performance
  • Congested channels causing reduced throughput
  • Access points competing for limited airtime

The solution: Wi-Fi survey & analysis

We performed an on-site Wi-Fi survey using [WiFiman](chatgpt://generic-entity?number=0), focusing not only on signal levels, but also on channel usage and airtime consumption.

By analysing airtime utilisation, we could see how much of the available wireless capacity was being consumed โ€” and where contention was limiting real-world performance.

๐Ÿ“Š Signal & coverage mapping
Identifying weak areas and coverage gaps.
๐Ÿ“ก Interference detection
Locating competing networks and noise sources.
โฑ๏ธ Airtime utilisation
Measuring real channel congestion and contention.
๐Ÿ”„ Channel optimisation
Adjusting channels and widths for best performance.

The outcome

The survey provided clear, data-driven insight into why performance was inconsistent. With interference sources identified and airtime balanced, the network could be tuned for reliability rather than raw signal strength.

  • Reduced interference from overlapping networks
  • Improved throughput in high-use areas
  • More consistent performance across the site
  • Better roaming behaviour for client devices
  • A network design informed by real usage data

Why this works

Wi-Fi performance is limited by airtime, not just signal strength. By measuring how the wireless spectrum is actually being used, issues can be addressed accurately rather than through trial and error.

Wi-Fi not performing as expected?

If your Wi-Fi struggles despite good signal levels, a proper survey can reveal the real cause and guide effective improvements.
